Valerie Chua is a self-taught illustrator from Manila, Philippines, who has recently graduated with a BA in Humanities at the University of Asia and the Pacific. She specializes in traditional mediums such as watercolor, gouache and acrylic and is also skilled in traditional and digital mixed media and collage work. Her work is predominantly influenced by East Asian watercolor artists, magical realist literature and poetry.
A lot of my works are composed of female faces and figures displaying an equivocal sense of honesty and deceptiveness. I play with the idea of women revealing herself through nature. Recently I've been attracted to Japan's Mori/Forest Girl subculture, which gives prime to innocence and simplicity.
